How Cable Plowing Works

Utility conduit installation through cable plowing is a popular method of trenchless construction that is typically used in large, open, soft-surface areas. The process involves the use of a machine that creates a narrow slot on the ground surface.

Depending on the subsurface geology and the designed depth of the utility, it may take several passes to loosen the ground and create a "plow slot" of the required width and depth. This slot is used to install either conduit(s) or directly bury cable into the ground as the equipment rolls forward along the established running line.

The conduit is usually coiled on a reel mounted at the back of the machine and fed through some pullies and into the plow chute, which directs and places the end-use product into the bottom of the bore slot. Afterward, the slot is back-filled and compacted by a process of blading or "wheel rolling" the excavated material back into the slot, resulting in minimal disturbance to the site's surface.

Cable plowing can also be used in small-scale projects, such as yards and soft-surfaced landscaped areas, to install infrastructure like telephone, natural gas, and cable television. This method creates far less disturbance to the surface and results in a cleaner finished installation.
